April 12,2013

Dear Parents,

We continued our Nutrition Unit by learning about the fruit group and the grain group through class discussions and listening to stories.  Some of the children's favorite stories were:  Eating Right, The Fruit Group, and the Grain Group, all written by Helen Frost.  The children made Food Group Place mats which even included a picture of them drinking a glass of milk.

We made a delicious fruit salad which included blueberries, cantaloupe, apples, bananas, and blackberries.  The children loved it and couldn't get enough of it.

We made whole grain blueberry pancakes, which were also a big hit with the children, as you can see from the pictures.  The children also made rice cake faces by spreading cream cheese on rice cakes and adding fruit faces to them.

The children practiced yoga moves by looking at pictures from Babar's Yoga for Elephants book, and tried to imitate their moves.

The children were so excited when they finished all their projects and were able to take them home. They especially liked using their place mats at snack time.  They kept pointing to the picture of themselves drinking the milk and saying "That's me."

This week in music, the children started learning about the base clef.  They drew a pictures of the clef and learned the range.  The children  enjoyed dancing to movement songs and learning the notes of the scale. They concluded the music class by practicing with a mini-sized accordion.
